CHILDREN REMINDED OF HEALTHY EATING
To help fight the flab, Holland Hall Hotel kindly organised a fun Healthy Eating Craft Workshop at local primary school, St Teresa's. It has been reported that 1 in 10 of 11 year olds in Wigan are physically obese. Raising awareness of healthy eating in the community is a priority of Holland Hall, who have organised a series of events in partnership with local schools.
The Manager of Holland Hall, Colin Whittle, and Aspects Restaurant Manager Michelle Sammons went along to see how the children got on. "Holland Hall are committed to the health of the local community and this workshop emphasises our point of how healthy eating can contribute to a fruitful life."
This will help Ashton, Leigh and Wigan Primary Care Trust who have a Public Service Agreement to halt obesity in the under 11's by 2010 (Ashton, Leigh and Wigan PCT, 2007).
The workshop consisted of the pupils making fruit and veg. shaped characters and then to finish off, the children clothed two life-size figures in fruit and veg. pictures. The children got to keep their creation to decorate the school and took their own fruit and veg. characters home with them.
According to the NHS, fruit and vegetables should make up about a third of our daily food intake. They contain high levels of essential vitamins and minerals, and can be high in fibre and low in fat. Fruit and vegetables can also help reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and some cancers. (NHS Direct, 2008)
Mrs Rigby, teacher of the Year Six pupils who took part, worked with the local Hotel to organise the day which the children thoroughly enjoyed, as can be seen from the photograph of the day.
